Holds a PhD in Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. The topic of his thesis ‘Creativity in Design: the role of domain knowledge in designing'. He received his M.Sc. in psychology, University of Amsterdam. Henri worked as a researcher at the University of Amsterdam, the Royal Dutch Air Force, and - in the field of educational research - at Delft University. Since 1982 he is works for the School of Industrial Design Engineering of Delft University of Technology, nowadays as an associate professor. He is director of the Master Degree course on 'Integrated Product Design'. His international projects in Tanzania, Colombia, Korea and Croatia and Slovenia range from consulting on innovative product development and on implementing new design curricula to research into design & innovation. His education and research areas are focused on design thinking, information processing in design, cultural diversity, and cognitive ergonomics. He published books and papers on these topics. In the same areas he supervises eight Phd projects and has been involved in several Phd committees abroad.
Since 2008 he is a visiting professor at the Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa, Departamento de Arte e Design in Portugal.
He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Design Research.
