From the beginning of Design as profession about 50 years back, design in India has evolved and simultaneously keeping pace with the world. Recently Indian design reached another level of maturity by being one of the few countries to adopt National Design Policy. This panel discussion will discuss the evolution of Indian design over the past 50 years. It will outline the key impetus areas and action required in those areas to realize the vision of making India the Asia Hub of Design.

Little has been discussed about Indian design philosophy. Questions like why Indian design takes a particular form or serve a particular function are still an enigma. This discussion will seek to bring in structured knowledge and understanding of Indian design; its intentions, the users it serve and other related issues. The panelists will explore how design development and adaptation in India is related and intertwined with the larger social environment. Specifically the discussion will revolve around design that is integral to the daily lives of people and its unique reflection of the Indian culture and socio-historical changes that have occurred in the environment it is located in.

Design, Innovation and growth are linked. Experiences and reports show that companies that use design are more successful than those that do not. Despite the usefulness of design to improve the MSME's competitiveness, it is seen that MSME's do not use design for various inherent reasons. The objective of this session is to convey to the MSME's the usefulness of design and to show the way to move from being an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) to becoming an ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) and thereon to becoming an OBM (Overseas Brand Manufacturing). The special focus of this session will be application of design for companies with business to business focus
